To raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of women, February 1 has been dubbed National Wear Red Day by GoRedForWomen.org. The Web site offers a free online check-up that asks you a series of questions that rate how at risk you are for a heart attack. The check-up works best with recent blood test results. The Web site also offers heart-healthy recipes and tips for fixing "modifiable" risk factors such as weight and smoking. They hope that people will wear red on February 1 to support the fight against heart disease.

Salem Macy's is participating in the effort by offering a 15 percent discount to anyone who wears red to the store on February 1.

But heart disease is not gender specific.

According to a recent press release by the American Medical Association, heart disease is the most deadly disease in the United States and accounts for nearly one-third of deaths. The AMA has released "American Medical Association Guide to Preventing and Treating Heart Disease: Essential Information You and Your Family Need to Know about Having a Healthy Heart," a guide that offers information and tools on how to prevent and treat heart disease.

The book also addresses the relationship between heart disease and dietary influences, such as cholesterol and sodium. It can be purchased at retail and online bookstores.
