In late August, Willamette University was proclaimed "exemplary" by the National Wildlife Federation. Over 1,000 colleges and university participated in a survey titled "Campus Environment 2008: Report Card on High Education Sustainability."
Campuses were scored according to 18 different items that referenced their commitment to sustainability. Examples include: sustainability goal-setting, interdisciplinary degrees, transportation programs, recycling and green landscaping. With 18 check marks possible, Willamette University claimed 11. Other Oregon colleges that participated were Pacific University earning six checks, and University of Oregon with four.
"I am perhaps proudest that Willamette's sustainability achievements were largely student-initiated," Dr. M. Lee Pelton, President of Willamette University said.
"These are students whose passion, leadership and creativity transformed our campus culture. They inspire and motivate others on this campus and beyond."
The survey was conducted January through May 2008 by Princeton Survey Research Associated International in consultation with the NWF.
NWF has a special Web site set up for the Campus Ecology report. Visit www.nwf.org/campusEcology for more information.
