With the primary election right around the corner, all eyes are on the presidential race. But there are many local races at hand, too, which shouldn't be forgotten. For instance, Salem's Mayoral seat is up for grabs, and the candidate who gets 50 percent or more of the vote in the primary will be the only one listed on the ballot in November's general election. To better understand these smaller, local elections, The League of Women Voters of Marion and Polk Counties have arranged the following opportunities for voter education for the primaries.
Speakers are now available for groups that would like an explanation of and a non-biased pro/con presentation on the ballot measures. Call Sharon Johnson at (503) 364-0637 or Lucia Norris at (503) 581-4132 for more information or to reserve a presentation.
The League is co-hosting a mayoral debate forum with the Salem City Club at noon on April 11. The forum will be held at Mission Mill Museum. Reservations for coffee or lunch should be phoned into: (503) 589-2975 or e-mailed to: nelalind@aol.com.
The League also will be taping candidate forums with CCTV on April 22 with the Mayor of Salem and Salem City Council Ward 5 races and the candidates for Polk County District Attorney. Those will run on CCTV. A presentation of the League's Voters' Guide will also be taped and shown on CCTV.
The State League is putting out the non-partisan Voter's Guide for statewide offices and measures. The guide will be available at public libraries or by calling Sharon or Lucia. The Voter's Guide will also be available online after April 15 at: lwvor.org.
