'Vantage Point' off the mark

Pete Travis makes his directorial debut in the new political thriller out today, "Vantage Point." The film combines the points of view of five characters in the fifteen minutes leading up to and the fifteen minutes after the shooting of the President of the United States.

Unfortunately Travis' freshman offering proves to be nothing out of the ordinary. It doesn't stand above any other political thriller, in fact the only thing it has going for it is the unique, yet gimmicky, viewpoints of the various characters.
William Hurt (Oscar winner for "Kiss of the Spider Woman") plays President Ashton who is in Spain for an historic anti-terror summit where he is gunned down moments after taking the stage.

Dennis Quaid and Matthew Fox (best known for his role in TV's "Lost") play the agents assigned to protect him. When the president falls, the two set out to find the identity of the shooter.

There are several different perspectives that come into play throughout the movie: the agents, a spectator, a cop, President Ashton, and finally the terrorists' views themselves.

Parts of the movie feel as if you are watching the Italian Job, Manchurian Candidate and the Bourne films, all rolled into one.

Although "Vantage Point" is shot beautifully, and the cinematography is top notch, there are scenes in the movie that are not necessary to the plot.
To be fair, parts of the movie were intriguing. It will challenge your perceptions and there is actually one scene where you jump.

But overall, "Vantage Point" is probably best viewed from the comfort of your own home.
