"Zany characters with distinctive quirks generate the humor for this play. It's a character-driven show," said David Janoviak, director of "Underpants," a century-old German comedy adapted by actor and comedian Steve Martin (yes, THAT Steve Martin). "There's a blustering bureaucrat, a dreamy poet, a nosy neighbor -- all with exaggerated mannerisms and hilarious lines."The story is launched as a beautiful young neglected housewife causes chaos when her underpants fall down while she's waving during a parade for the Kaiser. The original version was written in 1910 when the mere mention of knickers was scandalous. Titillated by the dropped bloomers, two smitten would-be lovers pursue her by responding to the sign her husband has posted to obtain a lodger.
"Farce is always a challenge because of the timing and absurdity. There's a fine line between over-the-top slapstick and presenting physical humor grounded in reality," said Janoviak. "Staging has to be precise; dialogue is fast-paced."
This play is filled with wisecracks, puns, and even "wiener jokes," all of which provide enormous comic entertainment.
"The play is perfect for Salem Rep because of the small cast and single set. Plus we're fortunate to have professional actors in three of the six roles. The set design is unusual, in that we've made it all black and white. Color is used only for symbolism," Janoviak said.
On opening night, May 10, Salem Repertory Theatre will announce its 2007-08 season. For tickets and information visit Salem Repertory Theatre or call (503) 302-8907.
