Turkey talk

Eating local is all the rage right now. And rightfully so, since purchasing locally grown food cuts down on emissions from transportation as well as funding local farmers and merchants. Many people this time of year puchase a large turkey. Why not make this year's feast one you can be proud to serve your family? Instead of buying one from a major chain, make your purchase this year from a locally owned grocery store such as Lifesource or Roth's.

Lifesource Natural Foods Store Manager Jeff Watson buys his turkeys from Shelton Farms, which is based out of California.

"I'd love to buy locally," he says. "But I can't. There just aren't any local turkey farms."

Lifesource will offer two turkey options this year. One is organic, free-range and antibiotic-free and comes frozen, and the other is fresh, free-range and antibiotic-free, but not fed organic grain.

These turkeys are available now by reservation only, and can be picked up beginning November 19. The turkeys range in size from 9 to 30 pounds and you can specify the size you want when you make your reservation. Cost is $2.49 per pound for the fresh, nonorganic and $3.29 per pound for the organic turkey.

Lifesource Natural Foods is located at 2649 Commercial St. SE. For information or to reserve your turkey call (503) 361-7973.
