Living in wine country may make us Willamette Valley dwellers a bit on the snobbish side about wine, but there is room for an occasional detour into the lighter side. The wine spritzer is a light drink and perfect for celebrating the kids' return to school and the last days of summer.
"Spritzer" is derived from a German word meaning to splash or to lighten. The traditional wine spritzer is a combination of half white wine and half sparkling water or soda. However, there are as many variations to this simple drink as you can imagine.
As wine has become more affordable and available and the American palate for wine more sophisticated, the spritzer has fallen somewhat out of favor, but with its light and sparkling appeal, this drink deserves a second chance. Here are a few recipes to try.
An inexpensive dry wine is the best choice for any spritzer. To make a traditional spritzer, combine half a cup of cold, dry white wine with half a cup of sparkling water. Stir gently and serve in a chilled wine glass or champagne flute.
With berry season at its peak, this variation is a perfect late-summer treat. Chill a large martini glass or champagne flute in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Remove from the freezer and place a few raspberries or blackberries or a combination of both in the bottom of the glass.
Pour in half a cup of white wine and a quarter cup of soda. Stir and serve. This would also be tasty with rose`, using the same proportions, or even red wine, but if you choose red, use equal portions of wine to soda since reds tend to be heavier.
Other variations include a Champagne spritzer or the addition of liqueurs to the mix. For a Champagne spritzer, combine half a cup of Champagne with your favorite fruit juice. To add an extra shot of flavor to a white wine spritzer, add half an ounce of your favorite fruit liqueur to the mix, such as a framboise, Grand Marnier, or Chambord.
Whichever version you choose, remember: spritzers go down easy, so drink in moderation.
