Salem isn’t the only place music is happening in the valley, and this month, we feature three musical locations that take us out of Salem.
Let’s start in Mt. Angel, the home of Oktoberfest.  Don’t skip to the next paragraph - I’m not critiquing an oompah band.  In fact, the first group will appeal to the hardcore punk fan.  Selah PR and Ripe is a local-grown group, hailing from Silverton.  They are described as having “an energetic live show with substance and an abstract sound.”  Abstract is a good adjective to use.  What came to my mind was the Beatles meets Sauron the Dark Lord on a bad hair day.  (Which I think is a compliment if you’re into hardcore punk.)  In any case, they can be found on August 13 at Mt. Angel Center for the Performing Arts, 220 E. Charles St, in Mt. Angel.  Tickets can be purchased at The Angel’s Table, (503) 873-9611.
Next, we travel to Monmouth, home of the WOU Wolves and a fine Music in the Park series.  They are worth visiting every Wednesday night during the month of August.  Be sure to go on August 17 when the Flying O’Carolan Brothers will perform a Celtic mix of fiddle, bouzouki, mandolin, guitar, bass and vocals.  Think Irish pub meets swing, bluegrass, and Brazilian jazz. Did I mention that this concert is free?  The Dave Anderson Memorial Music in the Park Series is held at Main St. Park, 100 E Main St.  All the concerts start at 6:30 p.m.

Let’s end with a trip to the coast.  Lincoln City is a great place to visit in the summer—think Ainsworth’s salt water taffy, Mo’s chowder, and the surf. This month, also stop in at Chinook Winds Casino and check out Credence Clearwater Revisited, playing on August 26 and 27.  Have you heard of Credence Clearwater Revival—CCR to the old-timers?  Think of hits such as “Proud Mary”,”Bad Moon Rising”, and “Down on the Corner.”  CC Revisited was started by the rhythm section of the original group, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Doug “Cosmo” Clifford and Stu Cook.  They’ve added three new musicians who are reputed to have hot horns and sweet sounds.  Are they as good as the original band?  Reconstituted bands are sometimes okay, often terrible, and rarely exceed the original.
But I’ve heard good things about the new CCR.  I’m interested in hearing what you, the reader, thinks.  Check them out, let me know, and I’ll print some of your observations in my next column.  They play at Chinook Winds Casino & Resort, 1777 NW 44th St Lincoln City on August 26-27.  Tickets are available at: 1.800.992.TIXX.
