I hear so much complaining about the lack of culture in Salem. We have wonderful visual, written and musical arts opportunities in this town, and I want to mention three musical opportunities for November. If you don’t attend one or more of the following concerts, consider your complaining rights revoked.Saturday,
November 12, 7:30 p.m. Pops Does Americana. Salem Pops Orchestra presents the Severin Sisters. It doesn’t get much better than this –Pops orchestra meets roots music, and the result is show-stopping. The Severin Sisters are a nationally touring duo, home-grown right here in Salem. The performance will be at the Elsinore, and tickets are available at the Historic Elsinore Theatre, Safeway TicketsWest, from sponsors, orchestra members, and at the door.
Sunday, November 13, 3:00 p.m. Willamette Master Chorus salutes Veteran’s Day, Honoring Americans Past and Present. They state, “As we look at the conflicts and pain in our world, we remember and honor those whose lives have been dedicated to the preservation of justice and peace.” The concert includes readings, poetry and letters on war and peace, intertwined with patriotic music and service hymns honoring the men and women of the armed forces. The performance will be on Willamette’s campus at Hudson Hall. Tickets are available at Jackson’s Books and at the Willamette University Music Office. Call (503) 370-8055 for more information.
Saturday, November 19, 7:30 p.m. Festival Chorale presents Great Opera Choruses. This is not a stuffy rendition of unknown arias performed in foreign languages. These are well-known pieces, all sung in English (while remaining faithful to the original tongue), and sung with feeling. Remember, opera is all about murder, lust, intrigue, and desire. Tickets are available at the Historic Elsinore Theatre or Safeway TicketsWest.
