The State of TV: New shows starting this week

Shows back on TV

Gordon Ramsay is back in "Hell's Kitchen" and is ready to start screaming at his apprentices as they vie for a position as executive chef in his new restaurant. It doesn't appear that the scheme of things has changed much in the game. First, the contestants cook something. Second, Chef Ramsay yells at them until they either cry or get better. Third, one chef wins. Fox has seemingly pushed Ramsay to be as mean as he possibly can be. On his BBC show "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares" he uses profanity, but not in the same fashion that he does on Hell's Kitchen. Catch "Hell's Kitchen" starting Tuesday's at 9 p.m. on FOX.

"My Name is Earl" is returning from hiatus this week with a one-hour episode. After this special, there are six episodes remaining of the current season. Check out "My Name is Earl" Thursdays at 8 p.m. on NBC. Other shows coming back from hiatus this week include: "CSI" (Thursdays at 9 p.m. on CBS), "Numb3rs" (Fridays at 10 p.m. on CBS), and "The Riches" (Tuesday at 10 p.m. on FX)

Reality TV casting

The CW begins casting on the reality TV show "13" today and throughout this month in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Miami. If none of those are on your travel itinerary, they are also accepting online applications. They are looking for energetic, competitive folks between 18 and 30. Grand prize is a not-so-impressive but evilly
significant $66,666.

What's "13"? Well things are pretty vague, they are calling it a "spine-tingling" new reality show, destined to be the first scary competition reality TV show. Some might say "The Surreal Life" was pretty scary. But with or without Ron Jeremy, they are probably going to try to scare the pants off of these poor people.

Look at the bright side: at least they aren't spending this time developing another whiny teen drama. I'm looking at you, "Gossip Girl."
