Twenty years after his band mates give him the axe, a failed drummer, now turned corporate zombie (Rainn Wilson) gets a second shot at fame when an opening becomes available in his nephew's rock band A.D.D. Let's just say that the senior prom has never quite sounded like this before.
Robert "The Fish" Fishman returns to the spotlight, due mainly to a boiling hot room and YouTube, to show us the passion and sweat of the `80s rock musician. This film takes us on the road with the washed up hair band drummer and three innocent teenage band mates and their slimy band manager seeking the big time. After a few trashed hotel rooms and arrests, we are joined by Kim (Christina Applegate) the mother of the lead singer and the only responsible adult in the group.
Kim shows "Fish" that he needs to grow up a little and put his failures behind him in order to succeed in the present.
The theme of this film is rather reminiscent of "School of Rock" (Jack Black 2003) but Wilson lacks the heart of Black's older rocker who teaches teenagers how to lay it down.
"The Rocker" is filled with a list of painful one-liners, Saturday Night Live players, and slapstick comedic situations that will keep you laughing. Wilson's character grows through this experience and even has some closure by the end.
This film was funny and will appeal to the perpetual 14-year-old in all of us.
"The Rocker" is rated PG-13 and is playing at Regal Movieland 7
