Most trans fats consumed today are industrially created by partially hydrogenating plant oils. Unlike other dietary fats, trans fats are neither required nor beneficial for health. Besides regular exercise and eating an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, reducing or eliminating trans fats from your diet is the single most effective way to improve your diet and reduce the risk for heart disease.
You can control your intake of trans fats by reading labels and supporting restaurants that have eliminated them from their menu. A few years ago Bon Appetit, who has the food contract for Willamette University, banned trans fats from fryers and all their recipes.
