It might sound like a relative of Bigfoot or Sasquatch, but the second annual Squantum Whiffle is an outdoor bluegrass festival. So far there have been no sightings of large hairy monsters. Initiated last year as a fundraiser for the Polk County Democrats, the Whiffle was a grand success and this year's committee hopes it continues to grow.
Squantum Whiffle Event Chairperson Fred Brown says that the goal last year was to break even, but they wound up making money.
"This year we hope it makes for a good fundraising event," Brown said.
All profits from the concert go towards assisting Democratic candidates throughout the state.
This year's line-up features groups such as Wild Hog in the Woods, Roundhouse, True West String Band and The Bush Pilots, who bill themselves as "alternative bluegrass." Food will be provided by two Polk County favorites: Andy's Café and Rick's Place. Wine will be available from Arlie Winery.
The festival takes place at Dancing Oaks Nursery. Tickets for this year's event will be available at the door and sell for $12. To purchase tickets ahead of time, contact the Polk County Democratic Party at (503) 585-3394. Dancing Oaks Nursery is located off Kings Valley Hwy at 17900 Priem Road in Monmouth. A silent auction will accompany the event with items available for preview at squantumwhiffle.org.
And what about that name?
According to Brown, last year a committee member and former teacher offered an award to her students to come up with a suitable name for the festival. A student offered up Squantum Whiffle, and, well, "It just sounded good," said Brown.
