In an era when it's possible to get quality video equipment inexpensively and edit that footage on just about any computer, it's surprising that there aren't more conceptual videos offered by area artists. That's not to say there hasn't been any but the numbers have been low. So, we'll consider this the start of a trend and point out that two local acts have recently released music videos.

Monmouth country singer Joe Shinkle has put together a video for "Corral Fence," which will feature live performance footage mixed with scripted scenes. The video looks just as good as anything you'll see on CMT. That may not sound like a compliment to some but we actually mean it to be taken as one.

Coming at the process from a different angle is Mill Race. For its track "A Garden Gnome, The Garden Never Known," the band enlisted the help of 13-year-old Evan Farris and his older brother, Sean. The two have crafted a three minute epic that focuses on the travels of the song's namesake and even features claymation interpretations of the members of Mill Race. The highly imaginative piece is the type of thing that could win the pair even more awards for their cinematic efforts.

Both of these videos can be seen on YouTube and, after you've checked them out, spend some time searching for other local acts. If you find any, e-mail editors@salemmonthly.com.
