Restaurants are constantly opening and closing, moving, remodeling and reopening, and changing hands. It's hard to keep up. Here are a few little tidbits that we've picked up along the way that will help keep you in the loop.

Pita, pita, pita
Word has it that Pita Pit will open in downtown's Pacific Building in late September. Pita Pit is a national chain which offers pita sandwiches with grilled meat, vegetables, cheese and a variety of sauces. Their menu is posted at www.pitapit.com. Owner Aaron Zane also has a Corvallis location. He's excited about his new Salem location.
"I look forward to bringing a fresh option of food," he said.

Soup Cellar moves into daylight
They might be above ground, but their name is the same and so is their extensive selection of soup, salad and lunch fare. If you've missed this former Reed Opera House staple, never fear. They are now located at 2505 Liberty Rd. NE #130. Visit soupcellar.com.

Grand Vines is even grander
Grand Vines owner Tim Duffy has spent the past few weeks repainting, recarpeting, and reorganizing the interior of his restaurant. Part of the remodel also includes updating the furniture. Pop in and see for yourself. Grand Vines is located at 195 High St.

Big Kahuna goes German?
Rumor is new owners will soon take over the trendy downtown hotspot. If our sources are correct, they will also bring a whole slew of new flavors -- German to be exact. The new specialty is said to be schnitzel sandwich. So say goodbye to nights of karaoke and hello to live music and adults-only atmosphere. Big Kahuna is located at 145 Liberty Street.

Do fries go with  that crepe?
We've also heard, through the gossip mill, that the owner of the French Unicorn is considering opening a crepery as part of her repertoire. Here's hoping.

The Big Kahuna as passed the tourch to
Steve Singley, owner of Singleys Bar and Grill. The new menu pays tribute to the famous haunt with panini specials and great bar specials. Most praised item on the new menu is the Cajun Salmon Sandwich: blackened salmon, served on toasted sourdough, lettuce, tomato, onion, and house chiplote mayo. Homemade frys are also a big hit.

So no, the downtown dive has not parted ways with bringing great food and good times to Salem.
