On one level or another, most of us are interested in "going to see the elephant," a euphemism for the desire to move on and discover what's around the curve, over the next hill, and beyond the horizon. "Going to See the Elephant," a play written by an ensemble of women, gives us insight into Kansas frontier women of the 1870s -- their thoughts and aspirations, hopes and dreams, sorrows and defeats. This play, set outside a sod hut, surrounds us with the reality of the unrelenting homesteading life from a female perspective. While stories of male settlers dominate the history books, it is the journals of the women who accompanied them that provide us an intimate understanding and perspective about frontier life. They remind us of the pivotal role that women played in the European settlement of the West.
This powerful play is performed June 22, 23, 24(m), 28, 29 & 30 at Albany Civic Theatre. For tickets and information, go to www.albanycivic.org.
