Wine connoisseurs, wine lovers, and beginning tasters are all invited to Willamette Valley Vineyards' Memorial Day blind tasting event. Five bottles of wine from around the world will be up for tasting and whoever matches the most wines to the correct regions gets to be winemaker for a day. Willamette Valley Vineyards invited Salem Monthly to attend a sample blind tasting. Wines provided included two from California, and one each from France, New Zealand and of course Willamette Valley Vineyards. There were six of us in attendance, including Jim Bernal, owner of WWV.When the tasting started a chorus of comments erupted from the wine staff:
"The nose in number three is the most pronounced graham cracker I have ever smelled."
"I caught a mocha nose."
"This one has a juniper nose. It reminds me of being near redwoods."
According to Marketing Coordinator Shelby Zadow there are several clues that can help you solve a blind tasting, such as the climate of the region.
But much of the fun of blind tastings, says Zadow, comes from the discussions that arise.
"The point is to talk about Pinot Noir," Zadow said.
Winning the competition, being winemaker for a day and bottling your own vintage with your own label, that's just a happy bonus.
Contests will be held throughout Memorial Day Weekend. For a complete list visit their website. Hearty appetizers will be provided. Admission is $5.
