"Let the dirt rain over you!"

It's already a catchphrase, yet the movie, "Step Brothers," was just released today. That's not surprising considering the pop-culture following that the two leads, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, enjoy. Ferrell and Reilly are back together after their success in "Talladega Nights." As step brothers, they are 40 years old, still live at home with their parents, and have no job prospects. When their parents marry, the two face the reality of having a new sibling and getting a job so their parents can get on with their lives.

The story is a rehashing of "A Night at the Roxbury," but the story isn't even that funny. The step brothers come off like caricatures of a Saturday Night Live skit, but nothing spewed forth is worth remembering to repeat at the water cooler. Once the movie begins the audience is pummeled with one-liners from the two leads. Someone forgot to put the story into the film, leaving jokes to not only bring the funny, but also carry the plot. Unfortunately, it fails completely on both accounts for the majority of the film.

Ferrell and Reilly have a good chemistry and if this film were an "SNL" skit, it'd be a great 5 minutes. The problem is that the movie is an hour and 35 minutes long. The leads were actually very good, but it's obvious that some of the improv should've been left on the cutting room floor. The result is a film that is nowhere near the quality of "Talladega Nights," or Director Adam McKay's hit, "Anchorman."

There are some laughs in the film, but that is to be expected from these collaborators. But to keep up the Judd Apatow-fueled comedies, they are going to have to bring something new to the table. This movie isn't brilliantly funny, it's stupidly funny and only achieves that for half of the movie.

"Step Brothers" is rated R and is playing at Regal Movieland 7, Regal Santiam 11, and Independence Cinema.
