New restaurant a standout
This morning I passed on breakfast, biked to the pool, swam lots of laps, ran a few errands, and then biked over to Lancaster Drive to try out the new Star of India restaurant.
As it turned out, that was just right.
The place is a little hard to find — it’s in a new shopping center at the northwest corner of Sunnyview and Lancaster, behind a Circle K.
It’s a bit bland outside, and the interior is no Taj Mahal. That’s not hard to forget at lunch if you seat yourself facing the buffet. The serving dishes are great copper and brass containers, and there are lots of them.
The carnivore in my party liked the lamb saag best, and it was just right. Creamy chicken makhani, ditto. There were vegetables in another creamy sauce that proved quite yummy also. Chicken tandoori, dal, a great homemade sweet condiment, pakora, and rice were also available in the buffet line.
The kitchen at the Star of India is clearly visible through two big windows. When a party arrives, the chef puts a naan bread in the tandoor, and by the time you’re getting serious with your plateful of food, a basket of it arrives at your table. It is very, very good. Did I mention that I was glad I had skipped breakfast?
This place has Indian food as good as any I have eaten in Portland. I’ll be back to order from the menu, for dinner, and soon.
Star of India is located at 2138 Lancaster for information contact (503) 588-9800.
