Special Olympics Oregon received a donation of $51,496 at the annual “Oregon is Home” luncheon in May, hosted by Roth’s Fresh Markets of Salem.

The charity luncheon was held at the Oregon Gardens in Silverton and was attended by over 700 community and business leaders from Salem and Portland. More than 25 local vendors contributed goods and services.

The Roth family has been supporting Special Olympics Oregon programs for 17 years and the company has donated almost $400,000 to these programs.

Roth’s Markets Advertising and Production Coordinator, Wil Hawkins said that company founder Orville Roth has been involved and a contributor to Special Olympics from the beginning.

“It was one of their first charities,” Hawkins said. “His continued commitment helped keep the doors of Special Olympics open and a viable charity even through some of the rough times.” Melinda Roth, Orville Roth’s daughter, volunteered as a winter sports coach for Special Olympics this year and personally spearheaded the Roth’s “Round Up Your Change” campaign in the company’s stores.

The “Round Up” program offered Roth’s customers the opportunity to round up their grocery receipts to the nearest dollar amount during April, donating the difference to Special Olympics Oregon.

“The campaign was a huge success with some $26,614 donated,” Melinda Roth said. “We are grateful to our employees who consistently urged customers to round up and donate to Special Olympics.”
