Upcoming season boasts ballet, jazz, violin, and puppet theatre
“Fabulous” is the word that Smith Fine Arts Executive Director Carole Orloff used to describe this year’s Series. The newly announced season kicks off at Western Oregon University in October with jazz violinist Regina Carter.

“She’s hot,” Orloff said, “in every sense of the word.”

Carter began as a classical violinist, until she fell in love with the sound of jazz at the age of 16.

“She’s the only big-time female jazz violinist that I know of,” Orloff said. “She’s jazz with classical chops.”

Carter will present her concert and a master class at WOU on October 6.

Next up will be Alonzo King - LINES, a ballet performance that will offer viewers a taste of contemporary ballet.

“Their work is stunningly beautiful,” Orloff said.

LINES will be performed on December 8.

The Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre performs “The Reluctant Dragon” on January 12 as a benefit. The series will subsidize tickets to underserved families.

On February 15 The Boston Brass will take the stage.

“They are an amazing group that does everything from medievel to contemporary to jazz to pop,” Orloff said.

SFA ends the season with a birthday celebration for Obo Addy, a Portland musician originally from Ghana. On March 20 he will perform drumming and dancing, as well as celebrate his 70th birthday.

Smith Fine Art Series tickets usually sell out well before the actual performance.

“Get your tickets early,” Orloff said, “or you may not get them at all.”

In fact, their upcoming April show, the Mark Morris Dance Group, is already sold out.

Orloff recommends buying tickets well ahead of time.

“We’ve been selling out earlier and earlier,” she said. “Don’t wait until the week of the show. The good seats are gone.”

Season tickets for the new season are on sale now for $88 or $40 for students. Tickets for individual shows will go on sale August 15. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium, located on the WOU campus. Free pre-concert lectures are offered before each performance. Pre-concert dinners, catered by Cynthian Catering are available for $12 at Gentle House. For ticket information call (503) 838-8333. For dinner reservations call (503) 838-8147.
