Film tour stops in Salem

Many children follow in the parent’s footsteps, but for Kye Petersen that meant hitting the slopes.

The documentary feature film “Edge of Never” chronicles his journey down a mountain in Chamoix, France in 2005.

“Edge of Never,” which premiered on September 19, makes its stop in Salem on October 8 and 9.

The feature chronicles Petersen’s attempt to finish his father’s final run. Trevor Peterson, an extreme skier, died on that very same run in 1996. Skiing icon Glen Place decided it was time for Kye to ski the same route and join the ranks of big-mountain skiers. The film follows three generations of skiers that mentor Petersen as he faces his fear.

The screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. at Northern Lights Theatre Pub and are introduced by director Bill Kerig. Prizes such as skis, gear, and lift tickets are also given away during the event.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.

Amateur filmmakers unite

Though images of hunger are usually exemplified by the distended bellies of third-world children, many people in this community have bare cupboards. Marion-Polk Food Share and Salem Cinema have teamed to create a film competition entitled “Running on Empty” the Look of Hunger.”

Aspiring and youth filmmakers have an opportunity to submit a film that centers on the look of hunger. Short narratives, abstract, artistic and non-fiction/documentaries film exlporing hunger related issues are acceptable. Entries must be received by the October 17 deadline.

Movies are ranked by audience acclaim at the screening held at Salem Cinema on November 7. The top three rated film are eligible for festival honors and cash prizes up to $1,000. Inclusion into the 2010 Salem Film Festival Youth and Amateur screening and competition is reserved for the top choice.

Entries must have been made within the last two years and are accepted in DVD format only. A $15 donation made to Marion-Polk Food Share is encouraged in lieu of an entry fee.
