A day in the life

Blustering wind and rain may keep coastal visitors at bay, but for those in the area the library offers an indoor reprieve. On December 8, "It's A Wonderful Life" is showing at the Newport Public Library.

This Christmas classic starring James Stewart and George Bailey, takes place in the fictional town of Bedford Falls. Produced and directed by Frank Capra in 1946, this film is loosely based on the short story "The Greatest Gift."

Clarence, an angel who needs to earn his wings, comes to the aid of Bailey's character who is contemplating suicide on Christmas Eve.

The Oscar nominated movie, told mainly through flashbacks, begins at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free.

Food for thought

While many consumers worry about food sources, nutrient content and other issues related to food quality, many others are trying to figure out where the next meal is coming from.

Oregon States University's food group is partnering with Horning Endowment in the Humanities, Corvallis Environmental Center, and Ten Rivers Food Web to present the 2009/2010 Food Film Series.

The series, which runs through June 3, has a line-up of feature and documentary films. All selections have a focus on food, health, and the sustainability of food systems.

On December 12, the series screens the documentary "Ingredients." The film is hosted in Peavy Hall room on the OSU campus at 2 p.m. Cost is $10, which goes to benefit Ten Rivers Food Web.

The remaining film screenings throughout the new year are free but donations of nonperishable food, personal hygiene items and money to benefit the OSU Emergency Food Pantry are accepted.
