Hauling the big screen out-of-doors

With the sun setting, the screen raises. Children and adults alike may settle down on the lawn of two local parks this summer, soak in the evening air, and watch a movie.

The City of Salem and Shutterbug join to offer a series of free film screenings at Riverfront Park in Salem this summer.

All movies are shows on a 24-foot screen in the grassy area on the north end of the park, located at 101 Front St. NE.

Gates open at 7:30 p.m. and film begin at dusk.

On July 11, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" bring Indiana Jones downtown, and on July 25 a showing of "The Wizard of Oz" is planned.

Moviegoers are welcome to make the atmosphere comfortable by bringing blankets or low-back chairs and snacks. However, no alcohol or pets are allowed.

The Independence Amphitheater at Independence Riverview Park also has a free movie line-up for the summer.

Every Thursday evening a movie is shown at dusk.

"Over the Hedge" is the choice for July 9, family flick "Yours, Mine, & Ours" is slated for July 16, "Spiderwick Chronicles" plays on July 23, and "October Sky" rounds out the month on July 30.

Kids watch free at Regal theaters

With movie theater prices reaching $9.00 for adult evening screenings, it's easy to understand why Netflix is profiting. Continuing in their tradition Regal Cinemas hosts its Free Family Film Festival again this summer.

Films included in the series run twice per week, Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 a.m.

In Salem, Lancaster Mall Stadium 11 and Movieland 7, 501 Marion St. NE, are participating in the annual program. A film selections are rated G or PG.

At Lancaster, "Horton Hears a Who," "Kung Fu Panda," "Surf's Up," "Bee Movie," are among the July selections. Downtown's Movieland has "Journey to the Center of the Earth," "Bee Movie," "The Tale Of Despereaux," and "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" on the bill.

For these free showings, first-come, first-served seating is limited to theatre capacity.
