What does it mean to LOVESalem? A local blogger is working to promote the cause of "living our values environmentally in Salem." The blogger prefers to remain anonymous because of the possibility of ramifications at work for thinking against the "carheads." His blog pseudonym, however, is "Walker."

"The kinds of radical changes that we are going to be experiencing here soon (and already are experiencing) are going to make some people very, very unhappy.  There are a lot of people who get quite angry when their paradigms are abruptly changed on them," Walker said.

The blog chronicles local involvement in solving the climate crisis by avoiding the "sprawl machine."

"It also points out to people that we really do need to love Salem and stop letting developers and city officials turn it into another Sprawlville, yet another place dominated by `Carhead' thinking," he said.

So what's a regular citizen to do to help prevent the sprawl? Walker suggests the first step is simply awareness.

"Notice the city council is already cutting the bookmobile and the library computer lab hours and other services and amenities in a city where the buses don't run on Sunday [and that] is dreaming of a $670 million Godzilla-sized third bridge over the Willamette so that people who live far from their jobs can drive even more."

Walker also recommends joining your local neighborhood association and groups like 1,000 Friends of Oregon and Friends of Marion County.

Walker thinks that one of the problems with Salem is that we have too many commuters.

"They see Salem as a parking lot -- a place to blow through as fast as possible in their car to get to work and to get home. The only thing they want from Salem is free parking."

On his blog, Walker stands strong against the airport expansion.

"The people of Salem would get more benefit from that $4.75 million if they converted it to $1 bills and took them up to Brooks and burned them in the waste-to-energy plant."
The airport, more bridges and roads, and combating the sprawl machine are only some of the issues that Walker covers in his blog.  To check out more about LOVESalem, visit lovesalem.blogspot.com.
