The fourth annual World Beat Festival Dragon Boat Race will take place June 29 at Riverfront Park. Local teams and those interested in signing up as "free agents" can visit the World Beat Festival site at http://www.WorldBeatFestival.org for more information and to register for the race by May 15.

Total fees for the race and a short season "club" membership are $40 per person.

To help local teams prepare for the race, World Beat organizers purchased Salem's first dragon boat in 2006 and refurbished it last year.  Teams and individuals who join the club can practice in the boat ahead of the race.

"The race and club are all about the spirit of camaraderie, good sportsmanship, and fun," said practice coordinator Erin Zysett.

Each team needs 20 paddlers, 2 alternates, a tiller and a caller. For the past three years, Salem has relied on Portland tillers and callers for both the race and practices. Individuals willing to train in Portland as tillers and callers are eligible for a discount on either their team race registration or their individual club membership.

The World Beat Festival's Annual Reception will be held on May 7 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Blue Pepper, 241 Commercial Street. In addition to island entertainment and refreshments, there will be raffle tickets for a trip to Hawaii, sponsor recognition, information about volunteering and door prizes. To RSVP call (503) 581-2004.
