Drama looks at Lindbergh trial
“Hauptmann” takes place moments before the 1936 execution of Bruno Richard Hauptmann, the German immigrant who was convicted of murdering the Lindbergh baby. Director David Janoviak chose this play because he felt it was highly relevant to today’s audiences.
“In a nation so caught up in celebrity justice, this was the first ‘trial of the century,’” he said. “It caused a nationwide frenzy generated by the media.”
Although Hauptmann is the title character and the narrator of the show, the play doesn’t advocate him as innocent.
“It really lets the audience be judge and jury,” Janoviak said. “No one knows or will say.”
Indeed, even Janoviak himself and other cast members who had worked on the script for several weeks didn’t know.
“This is really a powerful and compelling piece of drama,” Janoviak said. “The audience will be gripping its seats.”
The cast is a mix of Portland and Salem actors, and includes one intern, Josiah Bania.
This is Bania’s professional debut.
“It’s been really nice working with such talented, hard-working people,” he said. “They really take it seriously. It’s a different atmosphere.”
“Hauptmann” is the last play of the season for SRT, but next year’s season is already in the works.
“It’s very repre
sentative of our mission,” Janoviak said.
