"If my doctor told me I had only six minutes to live, I wouldn't brood. I'd type a little faster." - Isaac Asimov
This is the last issue of Salem Monthly Newspaper. But before the bugles blast out taps at the death of another newspaper, it should be stated that we'll be back on May 6 as Salem Weekly. That's right, the death of the newspaper industry has killed Salem Monthly... and increased its frequency to every other Thursday.
"We've recently changed shape and expanded our distribution area," said A.P. Walther, current publisher of Salem Monthly and the publisher of the new Salem Weekly. "Those were each just one part of the much bigger picture."
Salem Weekly will continue to be the area's largest independent newspaper with the additional reach of printing at least two times each month.
"It's always been our plan to increase frequency. The community, the economy, and the market have told us they are ready," said Nancy Ingham, co-owner and office manager.
The new publication will be met with a number of streamlined processes developed over the last 90 days.
"Our goal was pretty simple. We were tasked with reducing our work flow so that the transition from monthly to bi-weekly would be smooth for everyone," said Shawn Estes, development director.
Salem Weekly will be using recently enhanced custom software to manage operations, in addition to the extra distribution.
The move is to the benefit of readers, advertisers, and the community at large.
"We have twice the opportunity to reach readers with information that is even more relevant. Our event calendar and listings will be stronger, too," said Kendra Boren, editor of Salem Weekly.
According to Walther, advertisers will reap benefits due to the additional exposure.
"They've been asking, 'when is it coming?' We're happy to make the phone calls now and let them know that we're ready," he said.
For the community, Walther said that increased access to local media is the greatest benefit.
"The mid-Willamette Valley is underrepresented compared to Eugene or the north Valley by newspapers. With an increased frequency, we can help Salem have more of a presence," he said.
I'd like to thank the community for encouraging and inspiring us," he added.
Salem Monthly popular special sections Vine, Eat, and Wellness will continue with increased frequency.
Everything that readers love about the paper will remain. It's just more, more, more.
Correction: The printed version of this story incorrectly states Salem Weekly's first publication date. Salem Weekly's first publication date is May 6.
