In Salem's 2008 primary election, the mayoral candidates debated strongly on the direction the city ought to take. Their donors appeared to debate with their dollars as well. In data obtained from the Secretary of State's campaign financial activity database, ORESTAR, incumbent Mayor Janet Taylor's campaign raised the most in cash donations for a total of $53,723. Lloyd Chapman's cash donations were much smaller, coming in at $18,171. These figures only count actual cash donations, not in-kind contributions, such as time, services, or facilities. The largest chunk of money that came in for Mayor Taylor was from companies and individuals in the development industry, while Chapman had the most miscellaneous cash contributions.
According to Chapman, miscellaneous donations reflect the grassroots-style of his campaign.
"They were received from a couple of fundraising letters, house parties and the generosity of friends and those who believed in the principles I stood for in the campaign," he said.
All information on campaign finance in Oregon is openly available to the public and available online at the Secretary of State's Web site: www.sos.state.or.us. On the "Election" menu, click on "ORESTAR campaign finance Web site," then type in the appropriate committee.
