Band is slated to release a CD in April
Sad Panda started with a guy messing around with an electronic music program on his computer. It has become much more than that.

They call their music electronic indie rock, but I remember a time when we used to call this something else: industrial music. The band they most bear comparison to is the cornerstone of the industrial scene: Depeche Mode. In fact, the tracks I listened to were better than most of Depeche’s albums, although lacking in any songs of the caliber of Depeche’s dozen or so singles. This band is also a little more new wave than Depeche Mode. With a little electro-pop influence as well, they bear comparison to another ‘80s band: INXS. In fact, the band as a whole is very ‘80s influenced.

As far as modern comparisons go, Sad Panda is most like Beck and the Killers. The problem with that comparison, though, is they are not nearly as good as either of those bands. But this is a bit of a left-handed compliment since these are two of the best bands in recent history.

The bottom line is if you like ‘80s-style electronic-influenced music and new wave in particular, you will probably like this band.

Sad Panda’s CD “Music Robots Make Love Too” will be released at the IKE Box on April 8 at 6:30 p.m. You can also catch them at Wulapalooza April 29 at 8 p.m.  To find out more about the band, visit www.myspace.com/thesadpanda.

Aaron L. Kelly is a musician and guitar teacher, among other things.  He loves industrial but isn’t as hot on eighties music.  You can listen to some of his blues music at www.myspace.com/aaronlkelly
