"The Kingdom" is a political drama that hits close to home. Jamie Foxx plays Ronald Fluery, an FBI agent who leads his team into a U.S. military base in Saudi Arabia. While they are in there, the base is bombed. The investigation is impaired by the political nature of sending U.S. citizens to supervise a crime committed in a foreign country. Jamie Fox leads the ensemble cast that includes Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner, and Jason Bateman. With this cast, one thing that quickly becomes apparent is that director Peter Berg enjoys working with people that he has worked with in the past. Berg played on Jennifer Garner's "Alias" TV series; Jamie Foxx co-starred with Tom Cruise in "Collateral," which was co-written by Peter Berg; Jason Bateman played a role in Smokin' Aces which Berg also acted in; and two bit parts are played by "Friday Night Lights" alum Kyle Chandler and Minka Kelly. Peter Berg is credited with co-writing its first season.
The film is set mostly in Saudi Arabia, and follows the bombing investigation documentary-style.
Cooper plays Grant Sykes, a good ol' boy who doesn't mind playing a little dirty. Garner plays a medical forensics expert who gets the negative attention that you would expect a woman to get in Saudi Arabia. Bateman is an analyst who got stuck coming along despite his protests.
The film has a significant relevance and raises a lot of questions about current events in the Middle East. It has enough action to keep the audience watching, and a enough of a message to keep them thinking. The final scene should bring about some good discussion during coffee after the movie.
The Kingdom is rated R, the runtime is 110 minutes.
