Review: Red Ginger Restaurant

You might drive by Keizer's new restaurant Red Ginger, on North River Road in Keizer, hundreds of times. But driving past it without stopping in is a mistake.

This is a restaurant that, although still young, deserves your attention and your patronage. Their menu is based around "Asian Fusion," a movement that takes many forms but can be described as traditional with a twist. This is a place that takes risks, and the risks are plenty tasty.

For example, take their Red Ginger Hotpot Seafood. A hotpot is a traditional Asian dish, but here they take special care with the freshness of the seafood, enough care that if certain kinds of seafood are not fresh enough, the selection changes. At my visit, it included prawns, scallops, mussels and squid; but if it's not fresh, it doesn't make it on the plate.

Boo Chanthavong, who has been with the restaurant since the start, says this philosophy carries over into every dish.

"Just because it's on the menu doesn't guarantee we'll have it every minute of every night. If enough customers come in wanting it, we might run out," she says with a shrug and a smile. The smile is a result of less than a full month of operation already resulting in repeat customers, referred customers, and happy customers, a rarity for such a new place.

Chanthavong's vision for the restaurant is a beautiful one. The decor alone makes it worth a stop: muted gold, deep blacks, vibrant red panels, carefully chosen artwork, and tropical plants make a perfect setting for a very romantic date. Both upstairs and down, the space is a work of art.
There are no shortcuts here, from the simple yet carefully chosen wine list to the Asian beers and mixed drinks, from the exquisite service, this is a place to be; to enjoy some of the best in Asian Fusion cooking in an atmosphere that leaves nothing to be desired.

And it's affordable, too. Most of the entrees run between ten and twenty dollars, with a wide variety of appetizers, soups and salads to fit any appetite, petite to hungry.

Boo is already looking to the future. "With so many people already coming back, I have a really good feeling about what we're doing here." But she's committed to the idea of Asian Fusion, and already is planning the seasonal change in the menu to reflect fresh harvested vegetables and differing seafood harvests. Be prepared to be impressed, come whatever season. Red Ginger satisfies.

Great Food (#1)

We went to Red Ginger the other night. The food seemed to be more Thai than "Asian fusion," but it was devine! The portions were large, food was fresh, and the taste was wonderful. I had the Green Curry Rockfish, and I was plesantly surprised to also find scallops and shrimp in the dish. I chose to have soup before my meal, which was a hot and sour soup. I am not usually a fan of hot and sour soup, but this was the best hot and sour soup I ever tasted. The service was just ok. Our waiter was pleasant, but I was very thirsty for most of the meal, as he did not refill our water glasses even after seeing they were empty when he brought us our meal. We also waited a very long time for our check, and it was not busy at all while we were there. Nonetheless, we will be back, as the food was worth it!

New Menu (#2)

Red Ginger now has a new menu with lower prices. This menu offers much more selection than the previous menu, but the dishes are no where near as creative and gourmet as the previous menu, which is very diappointing since this is what really set this restaurant apart from other thai restaurants. The new menu offers the standard selections that most thai resturants offer. They have various curries with your choice of meat or seafood. They have various stir fries and noodle dishes. The prices are much more affordable. We ordered the green curry with seafood and the pad thai with chicken. The green curry sauce was the same as prior to their menu change, which was a relief since their sauce is delicious. There were two pieces of calamari, three shrimp, and a some tiny scallops in the dish. The waiter had said there were also mussels in it, but we didn't find any at all. The vegetables in the curry were green peppers, bamboo shoots, eggplant, and peas. The pad thai had good flavor, but the chicken was sparse and besides a few bean sprouts, there were no other vegetables in it. Both dishes had a beautiful flower radish as garnish, which was a nice touch. Overall, the food was great compared to other thai restaurants and we loved the lower prices. Despite our disappointment that the previous very creative menu is now gone, we will be back!

Great food at a good price. If they keep up those two things, then they'll be in business for a long time. Not a great location. They need a lot better advertizing.

Red Ginger Restaurant (#7)

You really need to check this place out! I usually don't take the time to review a restaurant or any other type of establishment and I'm not much for listening to other's opinions until I have tried it myself. The Red Ginger has become a favorite spot for me to take customers for lunch and my wife for dinner. The flavors of their dishes are authentic and the portions are usually more then I can eat. I use to be just a Pad Thai only eater when I went to a Thai restaurant but the Red Ginger staff convinced me to expand my horizons and I have never been unhappy. The atmosphere is perfect for a casual business lunch and when the sun goes down it makes for a perfect start to a romantic night out with my wife. If you haven't tried the Red Ginger then you're missing out. Good food, large portions, great ambiance and terrific staff. It's all you want in a lunch or dinner and you won't break your bank for your meal.
