The big question on many people's minds as we head into February is: Will there be an Oscar ceremony this year?

The Hollywood writers' strike already forced the cancellation of the Golden Globes ceremony, and most insiders predict the strike won't be resolved in time for the 65th Annual Academy Awards. If it's canceled, it would be the first time in its history. My guess is they'll try to cobble together some kind of show, perhaps with host Jon Stewart improvising for two hours. It just doesn't sound like much fun if we can't mock the celebrities for their bad hair and indulgent acceptance speeches.

Luckily, there are still many pre-strike films coming out in local theaters.

"The Eye"
February 1
Jessica Alba (you know her, the "it" girl who has yet to make a decent movie) stars in this remake of the 2002 Hong Kong thriller. The original is supposed to be incredibly scary, so it's likely this one will disappoint true horror film fans. Alba plays a woman who receives an eye transplant, only to find her new pair of peepers come with the ability to see some truly nasty stuff.

"Fool's Gold"
February 8
The title also refers to what you'll feel like if you spend hard-earned money to watch Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey search for lost treasure. When I went to see "Juno," people literally groaned at the trailer. Not a good sign.

"The Spiderwick Chronicles"
February 14
The first big kid's movie of 2008 stars Freddie Highmore as twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace who, along with their sister Mallory (Sarah Bolger), find themselves in a run-down house that pulls them into an alternative fantasy world.

"Jumper"
February 14
Doug Limon's follow-up to "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" stars Hayden Christensen as a guy who discovers he has the ability to teleport, or "jump," from one place to another. He uses his superpowers to track down his mother's killer.

"Definitely, Maybe"
February 15
Ryan Reynolds plays Will Hayes, a guy who is trying to explain his pending divorce to his daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin of "Little Miss Sunshine" fame). His daughter forces him to open up about the three other women he dated, including Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Banks and Rachel Weisz.

"Charlie Bartlett"
February 22
Anton Yelchin plays the title character, a rich boy who has been kicked out of every private school that his parents send him to. In public school, he finds a niche as a therapist of sorts for his peers, who need advice and the occasional prescription. With a cast that includes Hope Davis and Robert Downey Jr., it can't be too bad.

"Be Kind Rewind"
February 22
Jack Black plays a man whose magnetized brain accidentally destroys every videotape in his friend's (played by Mos Def) store. In order to satisfy a loyal customer, the two guys set out to remake all of the movies in the store -- their way.  The imaginative director Michel Gondry ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind') is behind this very fun-sounding movie.

"Vantage Point"
February 22
This action thriller weaves together five different points of view on an attempt on the life of the president. The cast looks good: Forest Whitaker, Dennis Quaid, William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver aren't exactly chopped liver, but the "Rashomon"-style story has been done to death.

"The Other Boleyn Girl"
February 29
Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson play two sisters vying for the chance to be the next wife of Henry VIII, played by Eric Bana. My guess is that had the real Anne and Mary Boleyn looked like Portman and Johansson, the famous womanizing king wouldn't have just figured out a way to make divorce legal -- he would have included polygamy.

"Semi-Pro"
February 29
Will Ferrell is Jackie Moon, the owner-coach-player of the American Basketball Association's Flint Michigan Tropics, who rallies his teammates in an effort to make their far-fetched NBA dreams come true.
