Vampires, angels, and The Rock dressing up like a fairy, can you think of a better way of welcoming in the new year? Unfortunately, it's not as simple as returning the gifts to Hollywood, so let's sort the sludge and find the good ones.

January 8

Crazy on the Outside

Nothing funnier than a guy who is having a hard time going straight after a three year jail sentence, right? Tim Allen and a troupe of actors try their best to convince us that ex-cons are wacky.

Daybreakers

Cash grabs for Twilight money has resulted in a number of vampire movies on the way. In this one, vampires are running out of a supply of blood and threaten the human race with extinction. A stake-wielding Willem Defoe isn't having any of that. This one might be all right, but it looks more like a love child of "Underworld", "Twilight", and HBO's "True Blood" than an original take. Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill co-star.

Leap Year

In this romantic comedy, the adorable Amy Adams is having a hard time getting married to her long time boyfriend. The boyfriend goes off to Dublin for business and she decides to ask him to marry her on Leap Day. Apparently this is a Irish tradition. The story is a boy disses girl, girl flies across the world for boy, but meets another boy who makes her doubt the relationship with the first boy in which she flew across the country to be with. Simple, right?

The Messenger

Woody Harrelson is back. With a short appearance in "No Country for Old Men," followed by a lead role in last year's "Zombieland" and now a lead in "The Messenger," Harrelson has moved far beyond the comic relief for Ted Danson. "The Messenger" follows the story of two soldiers who notifies the family of a death of a soldier in combat. It was a hit at Sundance last year, so I'm expecting big things from this one.

Youth in Revolt

Some day Michael Cera will stop being the virgin guy looking to get laid. In "Youth in Revolt" he plays multiple virgin guys trying to have sex with his crush. Yeah, you read that right. Multiple guys. We get to watch as he communicates with Francois, his imaginary alter-ego who somehow has more sexual experience than he does. The convulted plot line can only be saved by Michael Cera.

January 15

The Book of Eli

Denzel Washington is back to shooting things and that's exactly where he should be. In "The Book of Eli," he plays Eli who has to save what's left of a post-apocalyptic world. He is tasked with protecting a book which hold the secrets to saving humankind. Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis co-star.

The Spy Next Door

Jackie Chan is also back to jumping and kicking through crazy set pieces. Chan's been tasked with babysitting a group of bratty kids while also conducting spy missions. Think "Kindergarten Cop" but with more blocking with chairs.

January 22

Legion

God gets mad. God decides instead of a flood to send a team of angels to destroy humanity. Aided only by the archangel Michael (Paul Bettany), a group of people in a deserted diner have to fend off the legion.

Tooth Fairy

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson steps up his Disney career by stepping into the fairy wings of The Tooth Fairy. If you were wondering why God was mad enough to send a legion of angels, this movie is why. The marketing catchphrase is "You can't handle the tooth." Please don't encourage them.

January 29

Edge of Darkness

Let's see if I can make it through this without referencing Mel Gibson's drunk escapades. Gibson plays a father who is taken the edge of darkness (get it?) after his daughter is murdered. Once he starts unraveling the pieces of the mystery, he finds more secrets buried. This movie harkens back to a better day for Mel Gibson in front of the camera. It's more "Payback" and less "What Women Want." So go check it out, sugar tits. (Blast!)

Saint John of Las Vegas

Steve Buscemi plays Saint John, a former gambler turned desk jockey at an insurance agency. When a promotion thrusts him back into Las Vegas, he's tempted by his addiction and a full cast of characters ranging from Peter Dinklage to Sarah Silverman.
