What could be scarier than a month without any must-watch films? It seems as if the studios decided that this month wasn't going to be about determining if fear is a factor for you. Instead they are going to give it away to "Where the Wild Things Are" and pretend that the month didn't happen. This is month that romantic comedies came to die - horrible torturous deaths. Ooooh, spooky. When a little known zombie hunter movie "Zombieland" and the bazillionith Saw movie is all you've got for frights in the theatres, October is just sad.
October 2
The Invention of Lying
The trailer asks you to imagine a world where lying doesn't exist yet. But forget about lying, how about imagining a world where a plain chap like Ricky Gervais can land a date with Jennifer Garner? Of course the only way he's going to keep her answering his phone calls is to invent lying.
Whip It!
When troubles come along, you must ... whip it! Sadly, this movie isn't a DEVO biopic about the creation of the famous song. Instead, it's Drew Barrymore and Juno-herself Ellen Page capitalizing on the retro-fad of roller derby. With Salem's Cherry City Derby Girls on the loose, the opening night audience for this flick is sure to be filled with fishnet stockings and short skirts.
Zombieland
America's answer to "Shaun of the Dead" comes in a Woody Harrelson vehicle. I know that when the world is overrun with zombies I want the goofy guy from "Cheers" protecting me.
October 9
Couples Retreat
Four couples embark on a weekend of couples therapy. The cast is made up of some comedy heavy hitters (Vince Vaughn, Jon Favraeu, Kristen Wilson, Faison Love, Jason Bateman) but we've seen this one before. Even "Along Came Polly" had an overly sexual island habitant that made things awkward.
October 16
Where the Wild Things Are
I'm not sure where the buzz is coming from with this one. It's an animated flick of the beloved children's book, but it really feels like the buzz is coming from nostalgia. Sure, the trailer is beautiful. But did "The Polar Express" have such a following before its release?
New York, I Love You
I wish this movie were about Flava Flav chasing down his VH1 lover, New York. But unfortunately it's not. It's yet another romantic comedy playing this month. It's made up of several small segments of romantic gushiness that takes place in the Big Apple.
October 23
Saw VI
The blades are getting so dull on this franchise. Seriously, no one cares about the puppet on the tricycle. Here's a Reel Buzz from the future: Saw MXCVII follows the complex ritual deaths of a group of random (or are they?) people. SPOILER ALERT: Jigsaw's great-great-great-great-great-nephew's wife is the killer. Hollywood, please stop. Audiences, please stop encouraging them.
October 30
Michael Jackson's This is It
The only wide release for the Halloween weekend is film of Michael Jackson preparing for his comeback tour. Will there at least be a "Thriller" shout-out that is worthy of a Halloween opening? This release date is as weird as releasing Rob Zombie's redneck version of Halloween 2 in September.
