The summer has been full of big movies, but there are still very few stand-outs from the packed schedule. There's some buzz following a few of the movies opening up this month, so let's see how it stacks up. Right off the top, July gets bonus points for having a wider selection of movies than we encountered in June. There's the time period piece in Public Enemies, the satire of Bruno, the magic of Harry Potter, and a little Nic Cage. No one has ever complained about a little Nic Cage, right?
July 1
Public Enemies
The matchup of a lifetime. Willy Wonka vs. Batman. John Connor vs. Jack Sparrow. Guy who screams at sound guys vs. guy who wears cool hats. Johnny Depp is John Dillinger and Christian Bale is Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent that is sent to bring him down.

Bruno
Sacha Baron Cohen made a big splash onto the silver screen with "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan." That super long titled movie followed one of Cohen's characters from "Da Ali G Show" on a road trip across America. Bruno is yet another "Da Ali G Show" character who brings his flamboyant show to America. Eminem aside, look out for uncomfortable homophobia from our fellow countrymen.
Food, Inc
From the bar coded cow on the promotional materials forward, "Food Inc." takes a swipe at the industrial food complex. Who is paying attention to the mega corporations who spawn what's on our dinner tables? The documentary features bestselling authors Eric Schlosser ("Fast Food Nation") and Michael Pollen ("The Omnivore's Dilemma"). Probably want to get that greasy McBurger before checking this one out.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Calling all Gryffindors. Harry, Hermoine, and wide-eyed Ron are back for the sixth entry of the Harry Potter series. After being shoved forward a year, Harry Potter dorks are surely going to be lining up on this Wednesday release with broomsticks and witch hats in hand.
July 24
G-Force
As if there were anything scarier than little rodent creatures invading your house, now super producer Jerry Bruckheimer equips them with weapons. G-Force is about an elite force of guinea pigs set out to fight against the man. Sam Rockwell, Tracy Morgan, Nic Cage, and Zach Galifianakis all lend their voice to the furry animals.

Funny People
Adam Sandler plays a veteran stand-up comedian who takes Seth Rogen under his wing. The advertising around this flick seems to be trying to remind the potential audience that this is Judd Apatow's third film. It's perhaps a way of avoiding Apatow fatigue. But Apatow-helmed flicks are proportionally better than Apatow-produced flicks so there's some hope.

Whatever Works
An eccentric New Yorker (Larry David of "Curb Your Enthusiam") abandons his upper class life to lead a more bohemian existence. A slew of characters cross his path ranging from Ed Begley Jr. to Patricia Clarkson to Evan Rachel Wood. Woody Allen has been sitting on this script for three decades and only retooled it for David's special breed of talent.
