As the crocuses and daffodils bloom during the coming weeks, Salem area gardeners can look ahead to this year's growing season. If you have a wonderful garden or only dream of having one, there is a bountiful harvest of books available to provide practical advice and inspire creativity.
"The Western Garden Book"
This book includes an extensive A-Z list of plants suited to the western states, plus a short guide to gardening. The eighth edition of this gardening classic was published by Sunset in 2007.
"Taunton's Lawn Guide"
All of the important aspects of lawn care are covered in this guide written by John Fech -- improving the soil, mowing, fertilizing, watering, problem-solving, and choosing the right grass for your conditions.
"Roses for Washington and Oregon"
Brad Jalbert and Laura Peters give basic rose growing information and a color guide to rose varieties.
"The Well-Tended Perennial Garden"
Tracy DiSabato-Aust focuses on perennial care, maintenance and pruning. The author also adds an encyclopedia of perennial species.

Arthur Kruckeberg describes garden uses and propagation techniques for trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses of the northwest.

Peter Thompson shows you how to mix plant types and improve soil health to create long-term, low-maintenance gardens.

Besides giving information on herb cultivation, author Lesley Bremness also explains how to use herbs for cooking, healthcare, and beauty treatments.

If you want to have an indoor garden, Anja Flehmig gets you started with this guide. The book describes how to select the right plants, care for them, and arrange them throughout your home.
