Salem Public Library can connect you to great resources to enhance the theatre experience. The new Pentacle Theatre 2008 season, beginning next month, has something for everyone. It includes a musical, a Neil Simon comedy, a Pulitzer Prize winner and a world premiere.
"The Sunshine Boys" by Neil Simon plays January 25 through February 16. This out-of-print play is available from Chemeketa Community College Library in Best Plays 1972-73. Independence Public Library has the 1975 motion picture adaptation with Walter Matthau and George Burns on VHS, and Newberg Public Library has the 1997 television adaptation with Woody Allen and Peter Falk on VHS. Anyone with a Salem Public Library card can place holds on these items and check them out of their local library.
"The Diviners" by Jim Leonard, Jr. will be on the boards March 7 to 29. Salem Public Library has just added the script for this play to its collection, and the full text for this play is available on the Internet in Google Books (http://books.google.com ).
"Dorian - The Remarkable Mr. Gray" with book, music and lyrics by Randy Bowser and based on the novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde will run April 18 to May 10. This world premier musical has not been published, but Salem Public Library has many copies of the original novel. The library also has the 1945 motion picture adaptation of the novel on VHS tape.
"Betty theYeti" by Jon Klein opens May 30 and runs through June 21. The library owns a copy of the script for this satirical eco-fable set in the Pacific Northwest.
"Doubt, a Parable," by John Patrick Shanley is planned for July 11 to August 2. It won the Pulitzer Prize, four Tony Awards and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. Salem Public Library has the script for this play.
The beloved classic, "Guys and Dolls," with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, will play August 22 to September 13. The library has the music and lyrics. The show is based on a short story, "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" and characters by Damon Runyon, which the library has in "The Damon Runyon Omnibus." The library also has the 1955 motion picture adaptation on DVD and VHS. In addition the library has the "New Broadway Cast Recording of Guys and Dolls" on CD.
"Corpse!" by Gerald Moon will run October 2 to 25 as Pentacle's Halloween show. The library has the script for this mystery full of family bretrayal set in 1936 London.
"Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge" by Christopher Durang closes the season November 14 to December 6. This irreverent parody of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" does not appear to have been published. But the library has several other plays by Durang including "The Idiots Karamazov," "The Marriage of Betty and Boo," and "Baby with the Bathwater." And, of course, the library has the Dickens classic Christmas story.
