MEXICAN ARTICLE OFFENSIVE, RACIST
I recently read the feature "Ask a Mexican" in your April 2008 issue.  It is very  obvious to many of us  that Lars Larson and the Statesman Journal notice the increased activity when an immigration topic is covered.  The  SJ loves to just  publish any and all crimes with the culprit having a Hispanic surname.

I love picking up the Salem Monthly when I frequent downtown businesses. Coverage is great when it comes to announcing  new businesses in the area and future events.  The range is also great because you highlight new local music band and also announce professional events like Christopher Gardner's fundraiser.  When I turned that page and saw the clipart of a "Mexican" and Mr. Arellano's responses, I felt sick to my stomach.  In my opinion, that picture  is of a racist stereotype.  I am very surprised that Salem Monthly chose to use it.

I have lived in the Willamette Valley my whole life.  My parents are from Mexico City and I was born in Portland. My family has  lived in Silverton, Mt. Angel, Woodburn, Hubbard, Aurora and Salem. I started working and moved to Salem in 1996.   You will not find many others committed to raising the social well being of our  community like me.

If you want to  "Ask a Mexican,"  you will find many educated people in the area that can better answer your  reader's questions.  Mr. Arellano's answers do not impress me at all, and he  really cannot  represent Mexicans, because he himself is not one. I have no issues against what he is doing but that is not the person I want to represent my culture in Salem.

Myself, along with a selected few are in the works of addressing the media's use of the immigration issue. They  scare the public for the sole purpose  of raising  their ratings, essentially  by getting  groups of people against each other.

I have  been working  with the  school district and we are trying to address the  issue of  Latinos' high drop out rate.  This is the perfect example of what makes our youngsters feel that they are less than others. I plan to take this with me to our next meeting.

I ask you to be part of the solution.

Thank you for your time.

Editor's Note: The "clipart" to which you refer is, indeed, offensive. However, it is actually the official logo of the Ask A Mexican column and is intended by the author to be ironic. We apologize for any confusion.

CHAPMAN WOULD MAKE CITY MORE PROGRESSIVE

Finally, we have an opportunity in the upcoming election to help make Salem the progressive city it should be. Lloyd Chapman is a candidate for mayor who understands the need for a united effort to maintain all areas of our city.

Having been active in neighborhood associations
for many years, he knows the power of involved citizens can improve our community. First-hand experience has shown him the need for more bike lanes that don't just disappear into traffic. Lloyd believes in planning for the future so that new development is sustainable. He knows we need to reduce congestion on our roads and that there are many ways to do that, including intelligently designed upgrades to current roads and offering alternatives to driving.

Lloyd is dedicated to improving quality of life in Salem and working for the good of all our citizens. He has no personal agenda other than wanting to make Salem a great place for those of us who live and work here. A vibrant community depends on the strength of locally owned small businesses and well-maintained older neighborhoods. Lloyd will make sure they are given proper consideration in city plans. With Lloyd Chapman as mayor everyone will be welcome and respected at city council meetings.

Lloyd has the skills and experience to work with differing views and facilitate a fair and progressive city government we can all participate in. It's time for positive change in Salem. Let's elect Lloyd Chapman for mayor.

Republican Misinformation (#1)
by Anonymous on Wed May 14, 2008 at 01:36:22 PM PDT
While it is true that the Democrat Candidate for President Barak Hussein Muhammad Oboma has a Muslim father who is from the country of Kenya within the continent of Africa and other relatives there does not necessarily make him a Muslim or a racist. Obama attended a school in Southeast Asia and a public school living with his mother and grandmother. He claims to be a Christian of faith and attends a Christian church in Chicago, Illinois. It seems to be true that he is proud of his father and other relatives in Kenya but it would be a far stretch to suggest that he is some how connected to the politics in Kenya. The true facts just do not bear this out. While his connections to Kenya's politics maybe questionable and may need further investigation at this time I see know no sign of evidence or indications that bears out these facts. Although it is my opinion that Obama has a gift of gab and can perform and entertain many in the Democratic Party this does not in my opinion quality him to be the Democrat nominee for President much less President of the United States. My stance on this is based on the reports and news coverage of Obama's affiliations with the city of Chicago's underground mobsters, the militaristic Weathermen group of thugs in and around Chicago, his Pastor for many years Jeremiah Wright who in my opinion is a propagandist of hate and bigotry against the United States of American as well as other groups of people here in America as well as else where around the world. Obama's and wife's attitude and statements concerning their patriotism to America and their commitment to the values and the American way of life is not the norm or of the character most Americans want in the First Lady much less the President of the United States. To tie Obama to the politics and subversive tactics in Kenya sounds much like the Republican misinformation and nonsense at its best. It is one thing to accuse one of wrong doing with out any factual evidence and not telling the rest of the story. Just because Obama's father is a Muslim and lives in the country of Kenya who long ago abandoned Obama and his mother and returned to Kenya does not on its face lead one to believe that Obama is a Muslim or that he has political ties to Kenya other than he has a father and relatives living there. Obama has for the last 20 years or so attended a so-called Christian church in Chicago where his pastor in this church seems to spit out a lot of venom from the pulpit and over various media, which in my opinion is un-American and racial extreme radicalism among other such lunacies. However, while I would not vote or support Obama's bid for the Presidency I will not accuse him of unsubstantiated charges that are put out by people of questionable Republicanism misinformation and invalid propaganda which does not seem creditable or trustworthy. To put it very simply Obama cannot beat McCain in the November general election.

Let's talk about some misinformation. (#2)
by Anonymous on Wed May 14, 2008 at 02:34:30 PM PDT
Misinformation whether it is Republican or Democratic is still misinformation. And whether you intended to use unsubstantiated claims against Obama or not, you very much did in this prose that came out of nowhere.

  1. Barack Obama's full name is Barack Hussein Obama Jr. There is no Muhammad. Use of this is non-factual propaganda used to create a sense that Senator Obama is a Muslim. He is not. His father was raised a Muslim and was an atheist before Obama's parents were together. His books also mention that he did not grow up with religion.

  2. If you have not been to a church that finds problems in the world, then you need to find another church. Rev. Jeremiah Wright has the right to say whatever he wants. Democracy supports dissent and Rev. Wright is allowed to say whatever he wants about the country. If you believe everything your church says, you should seek psychological help. No one can say that they agree 100% with everything that everyone says. Not their pastor, not their spouse. The Wright scandal is a non-issue that has been perpetuated by both Clinton and McCain as an issue. If Obama didn't go to church, you'd say he's an Muslim who is somehow also an atheist. In order to be a religious politician, one has to vet their pastor. That is the establishment forcing someone to make decisions like a politician before they are one. Let's not forget that Obama didn't have a "royal line" to the White House. He is not George W. Bush or Hillary Clinton.

  3. While Reverend Wright is on topic - he served in the military. How can you call him un-american and unpatriotic when he served our country in the military? What's more patriotic than pointing out the flaws of the country he fought for?

  4. It's about time that the lapel pin means something again. I imagine you and folks spouting  this information have American flags hanging out of their car windows gathering bug guts. Patriotism is not a bumper sticker. It's about time we had a national candidate that is willing to stand up for that.

  5. Feminists among the Hillary Clinton supporters should be reveling in the fact that there are two strong women working in a national campaign. Michelle Obama is one of them. She's not Laura Bush, because she has her own brain. I haven't been proud of my country on a number of issues, it's about time someone said something that appeals to me and the MILLIONS of people in the country who feel disenfranchised by the elitist government.

People always complain about candidates lying to them about who they are. And then when someone stops the facade and actually acts like themselves on the campaign trail, people call them unelectable. Luckily, the new voters that are being brought in and engaged in this election will outnumber the folks who believe that McCain is a better option. Senator McCain is in for a fight that the GOP is not ready to back him in. They are with Senator Clinton playing Newt Gingrich politics. Buzzwords are out, action is in.
