Show me the money

I was interested to hear in the Mayor's State of the City address that we are no longer spraying pesticides for weeds in our city parks. That is the right thing to do since using these chemicals presents all kinds of health problems -- especially for kids.

But this month we also learned that not only is the city potentially millions of dollars in the red and that budget cuts will be coming, there are many deferred maintenance projects for our city parks. How does the City expect to pay for them?
We pride ourselves on our green spaces here in Salem but we don't seem to make them a priority. Friends of Bush Park was created by concerned citizens who were alarmed by the lack of effort and money dedicated to maintaining one of our most beautiful parks.

Now we hear about unsafe playground equipment and other needed repairs in parks all over the city.
Add these concerns to sidewalk and street repairs and a host of other needs and it leaves me wondering what our priorities are and why these problems have continued for so long.

Is it because we have a lack of funds or a lack of political will to prioritize basic necessities that will ensure our quality of life?
