REEL BUZZ - AUGUST

Usually August is like a warmed-over buffet line: you're hungry, but you're not really sure if it's safe to take any.

For that reason, the major film studios hold over a few movies not starring Rob Schneider or talking animals for the late summer months. Go figure.

Add in some promising indies at Salem Cinema, such as the much touted Edith Piaf biopic "La Vie en Rose," and you've got a pretty decent slew of goodies at the cinema this month.

Here are some August releases:

"El Cantante" (Aug. 3) -- Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez's pet project finally makes it to the big screen. Anthony plays Hector Lavoe, the guy that introduced salsa music to the U.S. in the 1960s. While I'm sure this won't be as bad as Lopez's "Gigli," it doesn't look as entertaining either.

"The Bourne Ultimatum" (Aug. 3) -- Paul Greengrass (you know the guy who never met a handheld camera shot he didn't like) directs the third installment of the series, which this time has Matt Damon still trying to figure out who he is and the government still trying to catch him.

"Stardust" (Aug. 10) -- Billed as this generation's "Princess Bride," (my God, am I really that old?), this fantasy stars Charlie Cox as a young man trying to win the heart of cold but beautiful Sienna Miller, by going on a quest to retrieve a fallen star. On his journey, he meets Claire Danes, Peter O'Toole, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert DeNiro.

"Rush Hour 3" (Aug. 10) -- Also known as "The Movie That Was Made Because They Found Enough Money for Chris Tucker," this third movie in the popular action series finds Tucker and Jackie Chan in Paris battling Chinese gangsters. Hmmm.

"Daddy Day Camp" (Aug. 10) -- Cuba Gooding Jr. stars as a man who decided to open a day camp for kids. Memo to Gooding Jr.: this movie was already made. It was called "Daddy Day Care," starring Eddie Murphy and it also sucked. Second memo: Your Oscar for "Jerry Maguire" is officially expired.

"The Invasion" (Aug. 17) -- Nicole Kidman is a psychiatrist trying to discover the origin of an alien epidemic. It turns out her son may be the key to the truth. Daniel Craig and Jeremy Northam costar.

"Superbad" (Aug. 17) -- Seth Rogen, star of this summer's hit comedy "Knocked Up," co-wrote this geek-comedy about two nerdy high school seniors who stage a booze-soaked party, but then everything goes wrong. Note that Rogen and Evan Goldberg are reported to have started this script when they were 14-years-old, so you kind of get the idea.

"Resurrecting the Champ" (Aug. 24) -- Josh Hartnett, aka Mr. Eyebrows, is a young newspaper reporter who meets a homeless man (Samuel L. Jackson) who he believes to be a former boxing champion.

"Halloween" (Aug. 31) -- This is director/musician/bad hair experiment Rob Zombie's stab (pun intended) at reviving John Carpenter's classic horror film. Just one question: does anyone know why this is coming out in August and not say, oh I don't know, Oct. 31?

"Balls of Fury" (Aug. 31) -- It's a comedy about ping-pong and it costars Christopher Walken. I am so there.
