REEL BUZZ - SEPTEMBER

I just have to ask, is there such a thing as too much Christian Bale?

I think not.

The Welsh hottie has beauty, brains, brawn, and good taste. He is my favorite Batman so far (take that, Michael Keaton fans!) and recently was seen in the newest Werner Herzog movie "Rescue Dawn."
He's going to be in two more movies in 2007: Portland filmmaker Todd Haynes' experimental film on Bob Dylan, "I'm Not There," which is scheduled to open in November, and "3:10 to Yuma," a Western opening this month which costars Russell Crowe.
I say, bring on the Bale.

Here are some September releases:

"3:10 to Yuma" (Sept. 7)
This Western is based on a short story by Elmore Leonard and is directed by James Mangold ("Heavy," "Cop Land.") In the movie, Christian Bale plays a rancher who agrees to hold a captured outlaw (played by Russell Crowe) who is awaiting a train to stand trial in Yuma, Ariz. Then all hell breaks loose. This movie is a marketer's dream. Men will go see it because stuff is going to get shot up. And women (and some men)... well, did you hear the names Russell Crowe and Christian Bale? I am so there.

"Shoot `Em Up" (Sept. 7)
Despite a terrible title, this action movie has strong buzz about it. Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci are trying to protect a newborn baby from a gang of vicious criminals, led by Paul Giamatti. The beautiful Bellucci plays a prostitute who specializes in breast-feeding fantasies. And word is that she and Owen have some steamy sex scenes. And did I hear Giamatti is a ruthless criminal? Sounds very strange.

"Eastern Promises" (Sept. 14)
David Cronenberg ("A History of Violence") returns with this drama set in the former Soviet Union. Naomi Watts is a hospital midwife trying to learn the secrets behind the death of a prostitute. Viggo Mortensen and Armin Mueller-Stahl costar. The trailer for this one makes it look very promising.

"The Brave One" (Sept. 14)
Jodie Foster gets all bad-ass again as a woman who recovers from a brutal attack and sets out to get some serious revenge. Terrance Howard costars and Neil Jordan ("The Crying Game") directs.

"Good Luck Chuck" (Sept. 21)
Another in a long line of recent "dude comedies" (see: "Wedding Crashers," "Road Trip," or anything starring Vince Vaughn), this one stars Dane Cook as a guy who has a curse -- every girl he sleeps with immediately meets the man of her dreams and gets married shortly thereafter. But when he meets Jessica Alba, he decides he wants to keep this one for himself, and therefore, can't sleep with her.

"Lust, Caution" (Sept. 28)
Do you feel that drip? That's this film snob salivating over master director Ang Lee's ("Brokeback Mountain," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") newest movie. It's already getting huge buzz for Oscar potential, let's hope the fact that there aren't any big Hollywood stars in this doesn't hurt it. The fantastic Tony Leung ("In the Mood for Love") stars as a powerful political figure who is swept up in an affair with a young woman (Tang Wei) in this espionage thriller set during World War II-era Shanghai.
