REEL BUZZ - OCTOBER

There are only four days left to catch Salem Cinema's fabulous DocuWeek festival, which brings international documentaries being showcased to become eligible for Academy Award consideration.
The festival, which started on September 21, will wrap up on October 4. If you can pick only one, I would suggest checking out the much-buzzed about "Crazy Love," which has received rave reviews from critics. The movie chronicles the bizarre relationship between Burt, a 32-year-old married attorney and Linda, a beautiful, single 20-year-old girl living in the Bronx. What happens between these two people exemplifies the phrase "truth is stranger than fiction."

Here are some other offerings in October:

 "The Heartbreak Kid" (Oct. 5)
The Farrelly Brothers ("Dumb & Dumber") are back, reteaming with Ben Stiller on this remake of the 1972 Neil Simon-scripted comedy. In the comedy, Stiller plays a man who thinks he has married his dream woman, only to find out she is more like a nightmare. While he is on his honeymoon, he meets another lady he thinks he is really in love with.

"We Own the Night"
(Oct. 12)
Joaquin Phoenix plays a nightclub owner forced to reunite with his police officer brother (Mark Wahlberg) when they run up against some mobsters. Robert Duvall costars.

"Elizabeth: The Golden Age" (Oct. 12)
Normally sequels are like poison to critics, but this is no ordinary sequel. Cate Blanchett reprises the role of the famous queen from her 1998-acclaimed film that she should have won an Oscar for (no, I'm not still bitter that Gwyneth Paltrow undeservedly took home a little gold man).

"Michael Clayton" (Oct. 12)
Despite a bad title, this one looks promising. George Clooney plays a corporate lawyer who goes head-to-head with marvelous actress Tilda Swinton. The always-excellent Tom Wilkinson ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") costars.

"Rendition" (Oct. 19)
Reese Witherspoon plays a woman whose husband disappears after being named a terrorist suspect. Hottie Jake Gyllenhaal is a CIA analyst who starts to question the tactics taken to interrogate terror suspects. Oh yeah, and Oscar-winners Meryl Streep and Alan Arkin are in this movie too.

"Things We Lost in the Fire" (Oct. 19)
Yet another movie with a bad title that looks promising. Can Hollywood not learn that movie titles that sound like Maya Angelou poems just don't sell? Halle Berry plays a widow who lets Benicio Del Toro move in with her and her kids. Before you know it, he is helping the family to "heal." And if by heal, you are thinking "get it on with Halle Berry," we can only hope.

"Gone Baby Gone" (Oct. 19)
The only thing scarier than Ben Affleck as an actor might be this word: director. That's right folks, Mr. Affleck has gone and directed himself one of these here moving pictures. And while the words "Directed by Ben Affleck" may be enough to make you set yourself on fire, just wait a minute. His movie stars Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris and Casey Affleck (aka, the Affleck that CAN act). So let's withhold judgment for now, okay?

"Dan in Real Life" (Oct. 26)
Here's two names I never thought I'd see in a movie together: Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche. But yet, there it is. Carell is a single dad who falls for Binoche (well, duh, who wouldn't?) but there is a twist - she is dating his brother.
