The Weinstein Company recently announced a 5-year deal with the Lifetime network to take the series from Bravo. Hosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn both embraced the move to Lifetime. But NBC has challenged The Weinstein Company's ability to make such a deal. NBC argues that they have first refusal to future seasons of the series. The Weinstein Company thanked NBC and Bravo for their contributions in the announcement about changing networks. They announced plans to premiere the sixth season of the show in November 2008.
According to multiple news sources, NBC had decided not to pick up further seasons of the show and TWC went to Lifetime. However, NBC's argument is that they should have been given the ability to match Lifetime's offer.
NBC Universal on behalf of Bravo released the following statement announcing their legal action to retain broadcasting rights for the hit reality show "Project Runway":
NBC Universal regrettably had no alternative but to bring legal action to enforce its rights to this program, including the right to decide whether it is in the best interest of the company to continue to air the show under the proposed financial terms.
Weinstein Co's lawyer, David Boies dismissed the suit without merit.
Fans of the show may be rolling their eyes at two very wealthy companies suing each other. But the show could be in jeopardy because of the impact on broadcasting rights. The show will wrap up casting this week. The big question is: if Lifetime ends up not being the broadcast network, will NBC pick it up again?
