Poinsettias offer a burst of color in the darkest of winter days. Many fear that the festive foliage is poison to cats, dogs, even humans. But according to several sources, that is simply untrue. Studies conducted by The Ohio State University found no toxicity evident at levels that exceeded those likely to occur in a home environment. The flowers are fairly hardy, but there are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind. First, keep the plant at a fairly steady temperature, around 70 degrees. Also don't fertilize the plant while it is blooming. And whatever you do, don't forget about your flower after the holidays have come and gone. With a little bit of TLC it can last for several seasons. For information on how to rebloom your poinsettia visit www.fernlea.com.
Locally, you can buy a poinsettia and support a good cause. The Salem Hospital Auxiliary gives away tens of thousands of dollars each year. A main source of their funding is their annual poinsettia sale, which will be held on December 5, 6, and 7 in the main lobby of the Salem Hospital. Proceeds go to a scholarship fund for students entering college and pursuing a career in the medical field. Last year the Auxiliary awarded more than $26,000 to 52 local area students. According to Auxilliary board member Joni O'Brien, they are also involved the Awesome 3000, a children's book sale and candy sales throughout the year.
"The Auxiliary is trying to get out into the community for a more positive focus," she said.
Auxiliary involvement includes the Awesome 3000, an annual fun run for children, an annual children's book sale, and candy sales throughout the year. For more information, contact the Auxiliary line at (503) 561-4555.
