About 170 progressives, community activists and interested Salem residents filled the Grand Theatre in September for the kickoff of the Progressive Film Series.

Peter Bergel of Oregon PeaceWorks spoke and led a discussion after the showing of Norman Solomon's "War Made Easy," which critically examines the buildup to the war in Iraq.

For one of the film series organizers, Ed Taylor, that discussion is the point of the series.

"It was encouraging and I was pleasantly surprised at how many people stayed after the film to join in the discussion," Taylor said. "We tried to emphasize that the point was more than just watching a movie. We've needed this for a long time."

Taylor said they also received good feedback and constructive criticism on how to improve the effectiveness of the series.

The next film in the series is "The End of Suburbia" which questions land use policies and the suburban lifestyle. It will be shown October 11 and local State Representative Brian Clem and Roger Kaye, President of Friends of Marion County are scheduled to speak after the movie.
