Spoleto's of Monmouth had a lot going for it: great location (except for the Little Caesar's across the street), good selection of brews, a nice lounge area, banquet seating, a pool table, separate arcade area for the kids and in this reviewer's humble opinion, some of the best pizza the Willamette Valley had to offer. But the owners opted to move to Independence and take over the former Town and Country Hardware Store location. Now named Dusty Spur Pizza Co., they have since re-opened in January 2007. Their new home is just a stone's throw away from the newly opened Independence Cinema 8 multiplex. So this could prove to be a very good location indeed. They have a wide variety of gourmet pizzas, such as the Ultimate Gourmet, which comes loaded with pesto, fresh garlic, artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, hazelnuts, feta and parmesan. Their standard pizza menu has popular favorites like Hawaiian, meat supreme, deluxe, taco and veggie but also offers a selection of specialty pizzas with various sausages, fresh garlic and hot cheese. Other menu items include cold and oven toasted sandwiches, calzone, garlic breadsticks and several appetizers. Of particular note is the House Salad for only $3.50, which comes with lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, olives, onions, cheese, ham or turkey and bacon.
Our party of three arrived on a Thursday evening. We ordered at the counter and sat down. After about 20 minutes our appetizer still had not arrived. It was nearly an hour before our food arrived, with the appetizer following. My companion's Italian sausage sandwich wasn't included, so we had to re-order at the counter. The sandwich arrived about 10 minutes later.
Meanwhile a large pie was delivered to the table behind us uncut and was reluctantly sent back.
The Dusty Spur was once a hardware store with a rustic wooden floor. It is now littered with peanut shells from the complimentary salted peanuts placed on each table in little galvanized buckets. The furniture and decor are saloon-like, with cable spool tables (more 1968 than 1868), a coin-operated covered wagon ride, an old steamer trunk, and ghost town mural. The pool table, modern movie posters, sticker vending machine and video games add to the "authentic" western charm. Unfortunately, it's not the coziest place to spend an hour waiting for a scrumptious meal.
The Dusty Spur Pizza Co. has great food, questionable service and dubious décor, but they do offer free delivery to Independence and Monmouth, and accept phone orders.
