Oregonians vs. Californians

I didn't know Oregonians hated Californians. I didn't know I would get a cold snarl from the worker at the poorly lit DMV on South Liberty when I handed in my California I.D. I didn't know the pastor of a prominent local church would poke fun at potential supporters moving north into his community in lieu of cheaper housing. And most of all, I didn't know Salem was such a great city.

My name is Chip Conrad. I have lived everywhere. Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Texas, and even Nevada. But this last move, in which I came to Salem, was from California. After getting married this past August to a native Salemite I figured I should bring her home. I was ready for a change and I knew my wife would love to get back to her roots. After all, a happy wife a happy life, right?

We didn't just blindly move though. I did my research first. Affordable housing, no rush hour, and no sales tax were all I needed to hear. We packed up the Neo-Uhaul, aka Budget truck, and migrated north.

Upon arrival I was stricken speechless. The weather was great. Our "cheap" rental was way nicer than the pictures on Craigslist and we happened to narrowly miss the snowstorm of the century. Needless to say my wife and could have easily been described as bright eyed and bushy tailed.

It wasn't until I started the humbling experience of getting to know the people of Salem that I discovered a softly spoken rule: Oregonians hate Californians.

Proud of my move, I would freely tell everyone where I was from until the fact that I was not indigenous started hurting my ability to join the community. Bank tellers ignoring me, the D.M.V. skipping over my number, cops pulling me over for no reason, I quickly changed to Oregon plates and kept my mouth shut about my recent move.

Now, I have learned to blend in. Though, I am sure people can still pick me out from my straight-leg jeans or the fact that I'm pushing 40 and still ride my skateboard to the store. But it’s not like me to be quiet. I'm suggesting a Friends of Californians Alliance. Lets all just get along. Look at what we Californians have to offer. The fact that we can stay up later than 10 p.m. improves the revenue of the restaurants downtown and I think a Surf Shop on Commercial would be a hit. I’m a Californian and I’m okay with that. Can we call a truce? After all, you can’t keep Salem a secret forever. This is a great city.

Chip, your wife is a Oregonian...didn't she tell you that you would be hated in Oregon?? She must have known this common Oregon fact.

Do you realize how far Salem is from the beach? I wonder if the school systems still teach geography.

They hate Californians like you. (#3)

All I can say is, she'll ditch him in 2 more years after she gets tired of supporting his shiftless butt, and, "Whoa, dude, get a better floppy-looking haircut. You are in major need of a shaping on those gnarly locks there....good thing you trimmed up your nose hairs before the pix." He's not even good-looking in a 40ish boyish way.

Great attitude (#5)

Oregonians-like most people- like reasonable, friendly people. Unfortunately a percentage of move-ins have brought an arrogant, pushy, attitude, and hence the prejudice. Treat people well, be humble, and they'll love you here.

Beautiful couple. Wish you all the best as you put yourself out there and navigate the haters in Salem, some of which seem to be rearing their ugly, anonymous heads here.

I am a non-native Californian (12 years) who has lived primarily in So. Cal. (OC & LA) with a brief stint in SF. Prior to CA, I lived in Portland, prior to that Salem. I love OR, love CA, both for similar & dissimilar reasons. Oregonians are great, but they do have a dysfunctional relationship with all things CA. It's funny how they love the increase in their property values over the past decade but decry its primary source, buyers from CA. I enjoy watching Oregonians waste energy disliking CA, please keep it up!

Oregonians! Ha! (#8)

I can only say I moved out of Oregon with speed, relish and thankfulness. I found most Oregonians to be infantile and sub-cultured... see above comments for further proof of this ethos. I believe it's an inferiority complex, combined with some type of seasonal affective disorder - not enough sunshine can drive one mad, perhaps? Anyway, glad to be back in the land of sane people - folks with no Fritos in their sphincters. Where you live and who surrounds you makes your life - so choose carefully, and stay away from Oregon!

Welcome to Salem! Everyone has a California-Oregon connection. If they didn't move from Ca, their children will at some point. I personally love visiting California in the middle of a rainy spell in Oregon- both states have so much to offer! Keep up the enthusiasm. Just as I would hate to think 95% of people who watch youtube videos are perverted sickos, incredibly negative, or part of some strange fringe group, I don't think that the people who comment on Willamettelive are in any way indicative of the feelings of most Salemites. Some people love seizing the opportunity of being anonymous haters. It's very cowardly. Kudos to you for writing an article, introducing yourself, and attempting to initiate intelligent discussion. Faith on 63rd Ave. Salem!

Very similar to what us mid-Atlantic residents feel about New Yorkers--- like a virus spreading south to our region. I think perhaps New Yorkers may be even worse.

Chip, you're not really that blind, are you? (#12)

You speak in a very casual yet self-aggrandizing manner ("my straight-leg jeans," "pushing 40 and still ride my skateboard," "can stay up later than 10 p.m.") and you wonder why Oregonians hate you. Dude I'm a California native and I can't stand you already!

I moved to Salem from California a long time ago, first to go to grad school and then I decided to stay. Even back then, there was a bit of irritation with newbies from CA..it has only gottn worse. Why? Well, someone above mentioned property values. While rising property values are good for those who are selling and moving away, it is bad for those who remain and look for housing. Or how about the newbies who come up here and say things like, "Gee, you guys should really get a (insert SoCal restuarant chain)." If you loved it so much down there, you probably should have stayed. Or, "I can't imagine how you guys can take all this rain!" Around here, rain is a part of life. Get used to it, or keep your disdain quiet. Or, more to the point here, "We can stay up later than 10pm." Do you even realize how insulting that is to the community you just moved into? Sorry guy, but you really hurt your credibility with that one...

Chip, Im a Californian transplant too, (Sonoma County)and I found some unfriendlyness here in Grants Pass when we first arrived, but dont let it get under you skin. Most of southern Oregon is from California, with the exception of redneck natives. You and your wife are a handsome couple, and you'll have a good life here...accept the challange and prove to anyone who may question where your from, and prove to them your as good a citizen as they and proud to be an Oregonian. Good luck you you and your pretty wife. Bye,Ralph

Oregon and Transfers (#15)

I "transferred" to Oregon from Texas with my then wife who is a native Oregonian. I wasn't sure of the state at first, but soon Oregon got under my skin, in a good way! I ended up having to move away from Oregon and have missed it more than a drowning man wants air. Yeah there is an anti-Cali sentiment (get used to it). But your going the right way. And the hell with the people who say that your ideas are terrible, such as the surf shop. I used to work with guys who would have LOVED a surf shop in Salem or Corvallis. They went surfing all the time. Just try to find your center in Oregon, don't fight being there. Soon you won't be able to even imagine moving away. I got into fishing, hiking and camping all over the place. I have never been anywhere as beautiful as Oregon, god I miss it there...

from California (#16)

My husband and I just took an apartment in Salem. We spent some time living in our RV traveling, but before that lived in OC, California. I had been under the mistaken impression that Oregonians did not like Californians, but my experience is that 95% of those I meet also lived in CA at one time or other. And mostly, the people I meet here in Salem are the friendliest I've ever met. There are a lot of things I like about living here, but the welcoming, helpful and considerate people are the best part. I find drivers are considerate of others. (However, Salem drivers seem to be left-hand-turn challenged.) Love it here!

Oregonians vs. Californians (#17)

Californians are not liked due to their self centered attitudes. Why do Californians scrub their car every day? One guy was even taken his wheels off and washing and rubbing them on the inside, it rains in Oregon get over it. I live in an apartment complex and a California couple moved in and for some reason the people who lived around them didn't like them. The lady above them would park their car angled so it was hard for the Californians to park. So the rude Californians moved in below me and besides having major ocd issues. They get up at 3am to leave by 6 am and bang the entire time. Now I don't care for them either. I always try to be nice to everyone no matter where there from but everyone that has moved from Cali is rude and has some sort of mental disorder.

The U.S. Census reports that more than 60% of adult Oregonians were born elsewhere. So the chances are that the people being rude are not native-born either. Welcome aboard.
