On Monday, we reported on controversy swarming around Senator Gordon Smith's latest ad campaign. Smith's campaign continues to suffer this week.
Recently another Smith ad started getting attention by highlighting how presumptive Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama had praised him for bi-partisanship. For Smith, the attempt was to look moderate and open to compromise:
The Obama campaign released the following statement shortly after the airing of this ad:
"Barack Obama has a long record of bipartisan accomplishment and we appreciate that it is respected by his Democratic and Republican colleagues in the Senate. But in this race, Oregonians should know that Barack Obama supports Jeff Merkley for Senate. Merkley will help Obama bring about the fundamental change we need in Washington," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton.
It's not hard to figure out why Obama does not endorse the Republican in this election. Smith is the chairman of John McCain's Oregon campaign.
Smith's troubles don't stop there. Remember those million dollar golf clubs that the Democrats chided Smith for in a recent ad campaign? He won't be using them very soon. Usually around this time of year, Smith holds a golfing fundraiser that costs $5,000 per person at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
"Special interests tell Gordon Smith what they need and he votes their way, despite how that legislation impacts Oregon's working families. If Smith is golfing, that means the special interests are whispering in his ear. What legislation will the special interests ask for in Bandon Dunes," Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Meredith Wood Smith said.
The event was supposed to take place this past weekend, but was canceled abruptly by the campaign. One has to assume that the big attention on his set of golf clubs took the fun out of a golf outing.
