One Facebook application is aiming to help your wasted time on Facebook save the planet. It seems like the perfect world scenario -- click a few buttons and plant a tree in the rainforest. The developers of (Lil) Green Patch are using revenue generated from their advertisers to make donations to The Nature Conservancy's Adopt An Acre program. A $50 donation protects an acre of rainforest habitat. While The Nature Conservancy is their current organization, the developers are encouraging feedback on other programs that serve the same cause.
So far the community using the (Lil) Green Patch application has saved millions of square feet of Rainforest on the Osa Peninsula of Cost Rica. The program is currently the top recruiters and donors for The Nature Conservancy on Facebook. So far $33,600 has been donated through the program, which comes out to 63 acres of rainforest as of the end of May. Donations are made at the end of each month. June's donation will be made in the first weeks of July. To see the leaderboard for The Nature Conservancy, visit their Hall of Fame on Facebook.
To participate in the game, visit the (Lil) Green Patch. The application offers users a chance to complete surveys and try out products like EMusic to gain personal square footage and to earn "GreenBucks." You can use GreenBucks to buy tools and food from the store to tend your patch. These surveys and products are paid for by sponsors who also donate to The Nature Conservancy.
